This reminds me of a soap opera…

Oct 01, 2007 in questionable

There are times that I have a hard time understanding where some people are coming from. Why is it that people think they can threaten libel or slander anytime someone disagrees with them or publically calls them out on their own stupidity? Are you really that offended that you have to threaten legal pursuits because someone bruised your ego? Is this how you prove that you are who you are by saying, “Yeah.. he called me an idiot! I want to sue him for it!” Oye. Get a life.

Now that that was said. See below for the reference. Be prepared to laugh:

02:26 <systat>
02:26 <systat> A type of defamation. Slander is an untruthful oral (spoken) statement about a person that harms the person’s reputation or standing in the community. Because slander is a tort (a civil wrong), the injured person can bring a lawsuit against the person who made the false statement. If the statement is made via broadcast media — for example, over the radio or on TV — it is considered libel, rather than slander, because the statement has the po

Stay tuned for the next episode of “I have no idea what I’m talking about, but I can make really empty threats.”

“I’m a certified Linux Admin, I know how these things work..”

Sep 24, 2007 in questionable

Wow. Yeah. Sure. This article is dedicated to the Systat guy in this quote. Ya know, certifications can show that you have dedication to your job and chosen talents, however, a certification is not a substitute for a brain and common sense.

I mean, yeah, you have certifications. Does that mean that you know what you’re talking about? The answer is simple. No. A certification does not automatically say to someone, “Hey, I know what I’m doing because I have a certification!”

I have certifications too. Does that mean I know what I’m doing? No. It doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong, the certifications I have I do know what I’m doing, but that isn’t the point of this article. If you read the quote I linked to you’d understand.

Common sense and knowledge of how something works does not necessarily come from a certification. I’m not certified in Windows Administration, but I’m damn good at it. I’m not an ASE certified mechanic, but I can take my car apart and put it back together. I’m not an astronaut, but I’m damn sure I could fly to space and walk on the moon just as well as anyone else.

Trying to convince someone in an argument that you know what you’re doing because you have a certification is like saying that someone KNOWS how to drive just because they have their drivers license. Franky, that means crap. Just because you HAVE the license doesn’t mean you know what you’re doing. Trust me, a certification doesn’t mean you have a clue. It just means you have more of a clue then road kill. You just move quicker when crossing the street as you know what the repercussions of you standing in the middle of the road are.

Point being: Certifications ARE a good thing, but when someone clearly has no clue, then you’re claims to certifications are instantly voided.

Here’s a tip: I would reconsider your certifications, but first you have to slam your head in the door of a bathroom stall and give yourself a swirly before I even consider respecting your authority as a certified linux administrator.

“I have LOGS! But, I deleted them…”

Sep 11, 2007 in questionable

I was recently informed by one of my many users that apparently there was someone using MY server to DoS and attempt brute force attempts against another companies’ services.

Any systems admin would take this to be a serious offense and of course would call to action the many tools we have to find the culprit and put a stop to it.

So, I went about setting up firewall rules to trap the traffic and doing TCP/IP and UDP sniffs on the server looking for anything going to the aforementioned IP block.

What I found was amazing.. wanna know what it was? NOTHING! :)

The person making these claims has no proof and is blowing smoke up my ass. That, to me, is low. Look if you have a problem with someone who uses my services, that’s fine. But when you drag my reputation through the mud you better have proof of said abuse. However, from what I’m told, you “had the logs” but you “deleted them.” What administrator in their right mind goes on and on for weeks at a time about someone abusing services but deletes the logs? I have an answer: a stupid one. Or for lighter terms, ignorant.

Next time, be sure who you are dealing with doesn’t have the ability to make you look like a dumbass. If it happens again, the carrier of the said ignorant/idiot soul’s services will be contacted and he can explain to them why it is that he has no logs of the said dasterly deed and why he can’t show proof.

Oh, I’m sure he has proof. Proof that he forged. :)

Next tool please…
